Work Process/Procedure Development & Improvement

This involved our Temaing Partnership setting up the System Engineering organization in response to direction provided from the regulator, DOE, to the operator of the site, CH2M HILL. Our scope included developing the procedures that would be used by the system engineers to do their work, training of the system engineers on the new procedures, review of system engineer work products to ensure they were being done at the proper level of technical detail, and mentoring of the system engineers. Because this work was done in parallel with other work at the site, our efforts were provided on a part time basis.

Our processes involved at the Fernald Uranium Enrichment facility, have been in the areas of procedures and with establishing new initiatives within Planning and Scheduling that have allowed for better control and understanding of programmatic requirements. These initiatives were additionally developed and implemented for the weekly "T-Week" scheduling process that allows for work to be effectively scheduled and reviewed prior to being released to the field for execution. Reviews with support groups dictate whether work requested can be effectively scheduled and implemented.

Operations Procedures and Technical Standards

This project involved the effort provided by our Teaming Partnership for the upgrading of Engineering procedures and Technical Standards at the CH2M HILL Hanford site to reflect those of a nuclear utility. The goals of the upgrade effort were to reduce redundant work, provide clear direction to the users (engineers) of the procedures, eliminate the tribal knowledge of how things were done and document it in procedures, increase the usability of the engineering products by orienting them toward the needs of the users, (design change procedures that resulted in design change packages that clearly showed the work that needed to be done in the field.) The success was demonstrated and hailed as a break through at the site.
